Tenby Surfing
Tenby, Wales, UK is a tiny town almost forgotten until late 18th Century. Tenby was about to perish for lack of sustainable economy and heavy migration by its settlers in search for livelihood. It is by a stroke of luck that some physicians noticed that the incoming sea breeze has therapeutical effects for people suffering from breathing and skin problems and hence, recommended it as an attempt to calm the symptoms and help the curing process.
By and by, people who visited this wonderful town became enamored by its immense beauty and phenomenal beaches and returned to it even when they were healthy. This is how Tenby became known as an example seaside resort and the administration, cashing on the change of winds, immediately focused on this trend and developed it into a comfortable and inviting tourist spot.
Since Tenby is almost surrounded by water, it is but expected that some of its best attractions would definitely be water sports. One such water sport attraction is surfing. The South-West facing beach is the best for this sport and every year thousands throng to enjoy surfing in the rough seas it presents. This is a very demanding sport and those who learnt it know it needs constant practice to stay in shape for this sport.
Those who love this surfing but have not mastered it yet, have two choices – (i) learn it by themselves by watching the pros practice and enjoy the surf, and (ii) learn it with the help of the crash courses offered by the numerous activity centers in Tenby itself.
Surfing is a sport that originated in Hawaii and Polynesia hundreds of years ago, and each century that passed added a little polish and hi-tech properties to it. Today, when you are faced with high quality, ergonomically designed surfboards, wet suits and computer-generated techniques, it is no wonder that surfing attracts more people to its fold than ever before.
Tenby and its surfing beach is an ample example of how addictive this particular sport can be, as you will find the numbers of surfers swelling every year on the South Beach. This Beach is indeed famous first for its surfing popularity and then for its donkey rides and stag parties that are held every year in winter, coinciding with the surfing season.
The waves in the winter are great and all those who love surfing, i.e. beginners and veterans, enjoy riding the surf. Of course, the tourists are usually warned by the coast guards to avoid the low tide surf, as it breaks in very shallow water that is unsuitable for surfing. Other than that, in winter, the South Beach of Tenby is go-go-go type of surfing center.
Of course, there are other water sports that Tenby is famous for, as scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, boating, etc. and each have its own priority level among the tourists that throng to this sea resort round the year. However, none of these water sports is so thrilling and as full of adventure as surfing.
Hence, next time when you are in Tenby, look it up; who knows you might become a lifetime fan of surfing, too!
